Somewhere along the way, this late Georgian cottage had been coated in cement. We carefully stripped it back to the bare brickwork, and the old window sills came away in the process.
We then wrapped the whole house in Diathonite lime-cork insulating render, which soothes spalled brickwork as much as it insulates it. We carried the render into the window reveals to help keep the cold out around the frames. We shaped the original sills from insulation to preserve their appearance, adjusted the gutters and fascia to suit the new wall line, and finished the plinth with grey mosaic render and proper grilles for subfloor ventilation.
